Mother teaches eight children at home

The school day began, not with a loud bell and announcements over the intercom, but with Bible reading for 10.

Then Alyssa and Tony Mihaly, 8 and 10, went off to fifth-grade math class in the living room.

Their sister Alayna, 6, cracked her first-grade arithmetic workbook at the kitchen table while Amanda, 13, climbed two flights of stairs to eighth grade.

Aiden, 4, and Anna Rose, 2, took to building Lego cities and drawing in the foyer.

Older sister Amy, 16, left for class at Aims Community College in Greeley and brother Drew, 14, headed for Valley High School. He enrolled in public school to take a trigonometry class not available at Aims.

It was all in a day’s work for Lori Mihaly, mother and teacher to her eight children.

”A parent is a kid’s first teacher,” said Mihaly, in a home unusually quiet for the number of youngsters keeping her busy. ”God equips most parents to be teachers. It’s confidence and motivation you need to do it full time.” Read more…
