Home schoolers form support network, but some say students lack social skills

Almost as soon as Deerfield residents Shiela and Dale Raker arrived at Adrian’s Island Park on Tuesday evening, their third-grade son Collin and fifth-grade son Brandon were getting to know other kids running and jumping on and around the park’s playground equipment.

“They’re very excited to be here and meet other kids,” Shiela Raker said.

The family had come to the park to get to know others interested in educating their children at home, or “home schooling.” The gathering was organized by the local Christian-based home school support group called Lenawee Involved in Family Education, or L.I.F.E.

Some home schooling parents say they choose to educate their children at home because they want more influence — not just over the quality of their kids’ academic lives, but their social lives as well. Read more…
