Op Ed: “Homeschooled children hurting public schools”

Kanawha County Circuit Judge Duke Bloom’s ruling last week allowing a home-schooled student to join the wrestling team at his local middle school is both wrong-headed and a slap in the face to both the parents who send their children to the public schools on a daily basis and the teachers who teach them once they are there.

Marion County residents Daniel and Christie Jones filed suit in December 2002 after the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission refused to allow their son, Aaron, to participate on the Mannington Middle School wrestling team. In turning down the Jones’ request, the SSAC cited a rule forbidding home-schooled students to participate on public school athletic teams. Read more…
