Legislators Speaking Out About Home School Lottery Scholarships

The Mason children study hard every day under the guidance of their mother. They are consistently outperforming their public school counterparts on the standardized tests.

The state says that the Masons will have to out score them again on college entrance exams if they want a lottery scholarship.

Their father, Shawn Mason, says that’s not fair. ‘The home school children though the benchmark is identical, act/sats, are being asked more of.’

Legislators say it’s because when the scholarship rules were first written, they required public school kids to have a 3.0 GPA in addition to a 19 on the ACT. That has since changed giving students a choice of submitting whichever number is better.

Since home school kids don’t receive grade point averages, lawmakers decided they should have to meet a higher ACT score of 23. ‘It almost sounds like discrimination.’ Read more…
