New Zealand’s Rise in at-home teaching

Record numbers of children are being taught at home as parental dissatisfaction with mainstream schools grows.

Figures released to The Press under the Official Information Act show that as of July, 2003, 6076 children from 3437 families were being home-schooled � double that of 10 years ago.

Last year alone 1705 parents applied to the Ministry of Education for permission to home-school their children.

In Canterbury 813 children are now being educated at home rather than in a classroom.

Education Minister Trevor Mallard said Ministry of Education application forms did not require an applicant to give a reason for wanting to home-school but some applicants did so voluntarily.

Reasons given included problems with bullying and dissatisfaction with their child’s current school. Read more…
