Virtual Academy Accepting Applications in Arkansas

SPRINGDALE — Northwest Arkansas parents on Wednesday learned about Arkansas Virtual Academy, which recently received a charter as a public school.

Randall Greenway, the director of the school, spoke in Springdale as part of a state tour to educate parents about the charter school. Most listeners were teaching their children at home-schooling.

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade are eligible to enroll in Virtual Academy for 2004-05 and Greenway expects about 1,500 students, although there is no limit. A high school program is also being developed. With the state charter, obtained last month, Virtual Academy can accept students from anywhere in the state.

Teachers and students work from their homes around Arkansas, with parents guiding their children through each lesson. Parents are also free to add enrichment as they wish and create their own schedules around a curriculum created by K12, a Virginia-based company. Read more…
