Idaho Virtual Academy’s future threatened

Denise Nicholson considered herself fortunate to be able to enroll all four of her children in the Idaho Virtual Academy.

Her children�s academic demands range from a special education child who needs extra attention to a second-grader who could read even before she started school.

�The school gave them a chance to develop their potential,� Nicholson, a Nampa resident, said about the school that basically allows students to learn at their own pace.

But now a flap over how Idaho�s first Internet-based public elementary school is funded is putting parents such as Nicholson in a quandary. Last week, the Idaho Attorney General�s Office labeled as �unconstitutional� a directive from the State Board of Education that would have funneled more state cash to the school.

�If that opinion is what is implemented, we will be out of business,� said David Gencarella, a Post Falls parent and Virtual Academy board chairman. �There simply is not enough funding to pay the bills.� Read more…
