Network Helps Home-Schoolers Group Stay in Touch

When Dorinda Burrell helped start Clinton County Home Educators in 1985, only five families home-schooled their children here.

�To our knowledge, we were the first families to have home-schooled in Clinton County,� she said. �I haven�t found anyone else who did before us.�

Since then, with educating children outside of public schools becoming more common, the number of families in the group has grown to between 25 and 30, Burrell said.

With more people participating, the practice has gained acceptability. But such was not the case when Burrell and others began educating their children at home in the early �80s, she said.

�It was very unusual,� she said. �It was considered by many to be illegal. But the laws in Indiana are very flexible. So it wasn�t illegal. But that was the perception.� Read more…
