Like students all across the state, brothers Christopher and Bryson Shelor woke up early every day this week, got dressed, ate a quick breakfast and headed off to school. Unlike most students, however, the boys didn’t have very far to go to get to class � just across the kitchen and into the living room.

The Shelors, ages 11 and 7, attend home school and are part of a growing national trend. More than 1.1 million students in the United States will be home schooled this year, that’s 2.2 percent of the country’s student population. In 1999 about 850,000 students were home schooled.

“There are a lot of reasons why people home school. I wanted to spend more quality time with my boys while they are young,” said their mother Mary Shelor. Read more…
