PA Home-schoolers chafe at state law

Home-schoolers say it’s just too much: piles of paperwork ranging from class logs to work portfolios to written student evaluations.

All are required under Pennsylvania’s home-schooling law, passed in 1988 and criticized by some home-school backers as containing among the most restrictive measures in the country.

Two Western Pennsylvania families filed lawsuits last week against their public school districts arguing that a recently passed religious freedom law makes home-school reporting requirements unnecessary. The cases are similar to a lawsuit filed in February by Mark and Maryalice Newborn, of Murrysville, Westmoreland County, against the Franklin Regional School District.
