Opinion: Here’s an issue for the candidates to consider

The latest polling numbers I’ve seen show that there may be some tight races in the upcoming election. The margin of victory in the U.S. House and Senate races could come down to a very small number of voters. Today I’ll give the candidates running for national office some ammunition and we’ll see what they do with it.

I was unable to locate an exact figure, but one Internet source claims that there were about 2,700 students in South Dakota being taught at home in the 2000-2001 school year. The number of homeschooled children nationwide is now between 1.5 and 2 million with the ranks of homeschooling families growing at a rate of about 11 percent a year. Families that opt to educate their kids at home still pay property taxes and thereby contribute to the public education system in the state, but when tax time rolls around in the spring there is an inequity that those running for national office should address.
