Life experience can count as learning

I was talking to a home-schooling mom who was worried about her son finishing his world history course and get the credits for it. He hadn’t finished the entire book because he had taken a two-week trip to his father’s native country and because he spent the summer studying in an Asian nation.

‘Why not just count those experiences as his world history study?’ I asked.

Worrying that life experiences might not ‘count’ is a common concern of home-schoolers. I often find myself trying to convince parents that their child’s activities are not ‘wasted time’ but rather legitimate learning experiences. Read more…
