Children with ‘armor,’ wooden swords and hand-made shields form a circle and chant this verse in a meadow-like space in a Boulder backyard, bordered by late-blooming dahlias, zinnias and a giant weeping willow. Parents form a circle around the children holding copper rods.

A glittered dragon nuzzles at the edge of the circle and is admitted, its huge papier-mache head leading a fabric-covered body fringed by light-reflecting CDs and topping dozens of black-trousered legs. It is admitted and ‘slain’ by the knights, who then, with their parents drink a cup of elderberry elixir the children have made. This metaphorical slaying of demons is part of a celebration of Michaelmas, the feast of St. Michael and All Angels.
