Homeschooling growing in local Pennsylvania school districts
Like most places, homeschooling is on the rise in Pennsylvania.
Mary Hudzinski decided to start homeschooling when she saw that her oldest daughter, a kindergartner, was being influenced more by her peers than her parents.
‘I wanted to fight that battle when she was 7, not 17,’ Hudzinski said.
In 1986, the Hudzinskis were one of few homeschooling families in Franklin County. They aren’t alone anymore.
Numbers on the rise
Almost 1.1 million students in the United States were homeschooled last year, a 29 percent increase since 1999, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
The number of homeschoolers averages 3 to 4 percent of local school districts’ enrollment. Read more…
