State’s job isn’t to boss parents

Although this bill was defeated, this is a good editorial insisting proper role of government to serve the people, not regulate them.

SUMMARY: Public schools are accountable to parents. It doesn’t work the other way around.

Senate Bill 291 aims to impose new regulations and standards on parents who choose to school their children at home. It’s a bad bill, one the Montana Legislature should dispense with quickly. The bill is useful, however, as an illustration of the topsy-turvy way in which too many people view the state’s role in education. Read more…
