Homeschooling goes mainstream

Homeschooling has become a demographic for marketers.

The common public perception of the homeschooling parent as an isolated anti-socialite toting hodgepodged materials is slowly fading with every blink of a computer cursor.

Homeschooling in 2005 means a cornucopia of Web sites, message boards, e-mail lists, and online classes and curriculum stores all directed at the homeschooled child. The Internet has revolutionized the way homeschoolers develop their curriculum and has allowed independent batches of homeschool families to band together into giant support groups.

It’s a far cry from the homeschooling movement that gained legs in the 1980s, when parents-teachers were relegated to a handful of published books, word-of-mouth advice and dog-eared catalogs offering a limited selection of materials.
