Home-school advocates press senators about access

In South Carolina some homeschoolers want legislation to let them participate in school activities. Right now it’s up to the various school administrators.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Ann Sealy has home-schooled her five children in Greenwood County for the past 13 years and can’t understand why South Carolina’s public schools would shun families so committed to their children.

The same way they oversee their children’s studies, Sealy says these parents would be first in line at football fundraisers and soccer bake sales.

‘Why shut the door to parents who want to be involved,’ she said Thursday. ‘They’ll be at booster clubs, they’ll sell hot dogs, they’ll come to plays.’

Sealy was among 50 or so people – about 20 of them home-schooled students – who came to a Senate Education Committee’s K-12 Subcommittee hearing on the Equal Access to Interscholastic Activities Act.
