A futuristic city with a mysterious beginning has run for the past 200 years on stored supplies and a generator. Faced with dwindling rations, the City of Ember’s only hope for survival depends upon Lina and Doon’s ability to decipher the clues found on an ancient parchment.
Lina has a strong moral code and serves as a good role model. She balances Doon’s hot-temperedness, and the two friends work through a dangerous situation to a satisfying conclusion.
For a debut novel, the writing is good, and the plot interesting enough to keep you reading.
The story continues with the sequel The People of Sparks.
