Mercy Watson: being the story of a pig, a bed, a chase, and some hot buttered toast is another creation from Newbery winner Kate DiCamillo. Serving both as a cute picture book and an early reader, Mercy might be just another silly story if it weren’t for the plentiful eye-catching and colorful illustrations by Chris Van Dusen; his fine work makes this a visually appealing book.
My only beef (or pork?) with the book is a shocked Mr. Watson (Mercy’s owner) blurts out “What the?” when his bed begins to fall through the floor. Just being picky, but that’s one slang phrase I wish my boys had never picked up.
Though many children will enjoy Mercy’s shenanigans, my 4-year-old son wasn’t one of them. He was quite bored with the story. His latest favorites are the hilarious Morris and Boris books by Bernard Wiseman.
Those who enjoy Mercy Watson can look forward to seeing more books starring her in the future.
