This sweet book tells the story of how a lonely hunter finds a family with a mermaid, a bear, a lynx, and an orphaned little boy. With narrations that are both harmonious and impacting, The Animal Family is a rare gem in children’s literature. My son shared with me, “It’s so funny I should like this book, because nothing really happens.” It’s true – there is no dastardly villain, no travel to imaginary worlds, and no cleverly concocted mysteries. The Animal Family is simply a sentimentally moving, and beautifully told story about how a family came to be.
I wasn’t at all surprised to learn the late author is most remembered for his works of poetry.
