The Light at Tern Rock (1952 Newbery honor)

This lovely book conveys in such a tender way the essence of Christmas. Take away the glitter, the festivities, even the traditional church celebrations, and will it still feel like Christmas? As Ronnie found out in this story, the answer is yes. When he and his Aunt Martha agree to man the Tern Rock lighthouse to provide the caretaker with a 2-week leave, they do so only because of his guarantee to return well before Christmas. When the old man fails to return as promised, Ronnie’s mood sours as seeds of bitterness well inside. A surprise is found in time to change Ronnie’s heart, bringing him a newfound Christmas joy. This book may be small (64 pages), but it is likely to be one of those stories you and your children will cherish for a very long time.
