This is great historical fiction set in Ireland in 1587. Almost all of the characters mentioned in the book were historical figures and the events portrayed really happened. The author simply had to fictionalize some of the details and conversation to fill in the story. Red-haired Hugh Roe O’Donnell was the son of the Irish King of Donegal and a champion for Irish liberty. He was captured and imprisoned by soldiers of Queen Elizabeth I of England in an attempt to subdue the Irish, but escaped Dublin Castle–twice!–and survived blizzard and frostbite in an attempt to rescue his family’s castle from attack. It is truly an exciting adventure. We can certainly appreciate the courage of Hugh and his friends to defend their homeland from invaders and their trust in God to help them do so. The book served as the basis for a recently re-released Walt Disney Studios film The Fighting Prince of Donegal, dating from around 1959.
