Six years ago, Mary Curcio of Nederland was casting about for a project that would engage her home-schooled child, while teaching crucial skills.
She decided on having her daughter, Emily, 7, start a small business. At the same time, Curcio, whose family had moved from Chicago was trying to figure out how to make her Midwestern toffee recipe at 8,000 feet.
