“The teachers didn’t know what to do with him,” Barnes said. “He would get bored and act up. So we pulled him out and I began home schooling him.”
The Barnes family is part of a growing national trend of parents educating their children at home. In 2007, the Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics showed that 1.5 million school-aged children were home schooled — an increase from the 850,000 students learning at home in 1999.
Parents cited different reasons for their choice to home-school their children, including the desire to raise their children in a religious environment, a dissatisfaction with academic instruction at a school, or health problems. Read more…
