  • Lazy Crazy Summer Days Our summer days may not be filled with soda, and pretzels, and beer, but they are lazy with a little bit of crazy thrown in.  During our summer break we are unschooling.  For unschooling I simply provide access to educational materials.  I'm not requiring any reading or that they even look at the materials.   Every day is different, but this morning our time went something like this: 8 year old:  Completed several origami projects from a book he borrowed from the library yesterday. • How To Add Vietnam to Geography For Gifted Young Kids A few years ago when we lived in Pennsylvania, I happened upon this book at our library.  I read it aloud to the kids and we laughed, cried, and thoroughly enjoyed this glimpse into rural Vietnamese village life and a very large water buffalo named Tank.  It is Water Buffalo Days: Growing Up in Vietnam by Huynh Quang Nhuong.  A job change and move later caused me to forget about it until I happened upon it again, but this time in the library where we currently live. • Washin? them dishes, feedin? them swine... We have ditched the dishwashing detergent and with it phosphates, plastic bottles, bleach, other crazy chemiclas, and expense and instead have opted for our own simple concoction of one part borax to one part baking soda and white vinegar in the rinse. We also make sure ther is hot water in the tap before running the washer. One of my friends used this, but wasn't happy with it because of her dishwasher. Read more...

  • Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner Book Review: Stone Fox by John Reynolds GardinerI read this book aloud to my kids today, and let me tell you. I was a blubbering fool. He was crying, too.Are you familiar with this very short chapter book? Here's a brief overview:Little Willy may only be ten, but that doesn't mean he can't run a potato farm. • Review: This Means War: Equipping Christian Families for Fostercare or Adoption Don?t miss the contest at the bottom of this post, friends!Although we have never adopted, when author Cheryl Ellicott offered me a review copy of This Means War: Equipping Christian Families for Fostercare or Adoption, I jumped at the chance! You see, I had read the first chapter of the book as a sample she offered a group of fellow authors. I had seldom read anything so honest and practical about the spiritual warfare a Christian family can face and I was dying to read the rest of the book. Read more...
  • Watch waterfalls of pity roar... We finally took a hike that was not ALL sunshine and waterfalls and rainbows. This one was hard. We hiked about 6 miles round trip with the hopes that the falls would be glorious. They were not. Eli is literally the toughest 4 year old I know. He hiked pretty much the entire time with high spirits. Pretty much the entire time. But not all of it. Read more...
  • On Fellowship When I started out homeschooling, I was part of a Classical Conversations community (CC).  Matty was in first grade.  I thought he was so big.  Molly was in the nursery or in my arms.  We were so small.  We still are, really, but then again...a lot has changed.  The first year I was just a mom, a participant with babe in arms and child in class.  By the second term I was weary and losing the vision for why I wanted to educate classically in the first place. • Mr. Emerson?s Wife by Amy Belding Brown A few months ago, I first read Best Intentions by Emily Listfield about the disintegration of trust in a marriage and the slippery slope to infidelity. Then I read The Other Side of the Lake by Mary Lawson about adultery and sibling rivalry. To complete the unplanned trilogy, I read Mr. Emerson?s Wife, in which said wife, Lidian Jackson Emerson, is torn between her duty to her husband, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and her love for young Henry David Thoreau. • Larryboy, Can I Borrow Your Plungers? I went to bed last night with laundry on my mind. We haven?t had a washer at our disposal for nearly a month. Though we had some very sweet friends let us use theirs several times, everything  has been handwashed? or should I say plunged (a friend let mom know a toilet plunger works best for handwashing ? brilliant!). I was not looking forward to rushing to handwash my clothes, which were nearly all dirty and then have to wait for them to hang dry. Read more...
