Keep hands off NJ homeschooling

New Jersey is one of only 10 states that does not require parents to notify their local school district if they choose to home-school their children. Those parents would like to keep it that way.
The government is right to butt out. Parents should be in charge of their children’s education, and home schooling is an option many in the state have chosen — up to 70,000 kids, according to a national home-schooling research group. Read more…

Homeschooling in NJ. Lots of statistics quoted here…

When Luke Mador grows up, he won’t be able to tell his kids he used to walk 6 miles to school, uphill, in the snow, barefoot.
School for Luke is right there in the living room, with his mother as the teacher.
“I feel like my home just turned into school,” the 8-year-old Brick resident said.
Throughout the United States, the number of children who are home-schooled is increasing by 7 to 15 percent each year, according to the Home School Legal Defense Association. Some 3 or 4 percent of the nation’s school-age children are being taught at home, according to the association. Read more…

More families are taking their children’s academic destiny into their own hands. Literally.
Consider the Orso family, who last month began home schooling their two children, ages 7 and 11.
“I don’t want to say schools aren’t doing their job, because they are,” said Bernadette Orso of Hillsdale, who taught public school for 11 years. “But this is helping your kids as individuals.” Read more…

‘Alternative’ Homeschool program marks a proud milestone

Their home-school diplomas may carry little weight, but they symbolize a milestone for a group of Camden students who fled the city’s troubled school system.
With pomp and circumstance, the class of 14 students graduated yesterday from the Community Educational Resource Network, a home-school center, during a two-hour ceremony at Camden City Hall.
“I’m so excited,” said valedictorian Gisellda Duarte, 16, who withdrew from Woodrow Wilson High to attend the center. Read more…

Homeschooled siblings win NJ skeet shooting contests

While home-schooling all seven of his children in North Bergen, Bill Koehler has searched for positive activities for the kids to get involved with, much like the extracurricular groups children do at conventional school.
Some became interested in gymnastics. Others got involved in martial arts.
When Koehler heard of the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Scholastic Clay Target Program for children, he thought it would be great for three of his kids – Sarah (17), Benjamin (15), and Rebecca (12). Read more…

Parents enjoy experience of teaching children

She once stood in front of a classroom filled with about 30 students. Now she stands in front of a room with only five children, ages 2, 4, 7, 9 and 13, who call her Mom. Sherry Prioli of Howell has never sent her children to school. Instead, she educates them in the privacy of her own home.
After years of working in the public school system and watching students getting left behind, Prioli made a decision. As she put it, “I was determined that was not going to happen to my children.” Read more…

Homeschooling Mom Under Legal Scrutiny

From a usually home education friendly state, New Jersey, comes news of the legal criticism of a homeschooling mother’s right to educate her children at home. Justice Thomas Zampino of the Family Division of the New Jersey Superior Court seeks penal charges against Tara Hamilton, college graduate and mother of seven, for homeschooling her children. This follows an apparently bitter divorce and charges by the non-custodial parent Stephen Hamilton that the children were not receiving an adequate education. Read more…
