Inoculate Children Against Advertising


Get Rich Slowly has a great post about how advertising could influence children more than parents and how to keep them out of that trap.
Shortly after we saw how easily we had been replaced as the value-shapers in our home, we also began to notice just how much allure commercials held for our children. Smartest Kids in the World?


WSJ has an article on the current fascination with how Finnish students test so much better than the rest of the world. While a test is only one measure, I couldn’t help but notice some of the possible reasons are often common to homeschooling: emphasis on basics, very little homework, less reliance on technology, no sports, proms etc…
High-school students here rarely get more than a half-hour of homework a night. They have no school uniforms, no honor societies, no valedictorians, no tardy bells and no classes for the gifted. There is little standardized testing, few parents agonize over college and kids don't start school until age 7. Read more...

Colorado gunman homeschooled


I hate to post bad news. But you should know much of the media is making this an issue. Whenever anything horrific like this happens, people grope for reasons why this person isn't normal. But mental illness can affect any family, regardless of upbringing.
Unfortunately, two of his victims were also homeschooled.
Swanson said home schooling should not be considered the cause of Murray‘s downward spiral, just as public schools shouldn‘t be blamed for a recent shooting rampage at an Omaha mall. Read more...
