About our Reviews
When we first started homeschooling, we were clueless about what our kids should read. I generally relied on various reading lists and trusted classics, which suited us for a time. Then, as my boys grew older and their reading diversified, we started finding more and more books that contained dreadful role models, material too mature for intended age group, and blurred moral boundaries.
I tried only picking award-winning books, thinking they were safe.
I did find some great reads that way, but I also found an equal number were dubious; with “discussion worthy” or “thought provoking” subject matter I suspect appealed more to adults on the committees rather than the kids forced to read the books. Nothing wrong with thought-provokers as they serve a purpose in helping kids understand the world and develop their own views. But, if the book has an agenda, contains mature themes, or sensitive situations, I should know that. I need to know what requires discussion. The only sure method that works for my family is to simply read the book myself.
Not too many parents have the time to read every title before their kids do, so that's where I come in. I'll give you honest reviews and inform you of any questionable content. Then you can better discern if the book fits your intended reader. Though my reviews are geared toward homeschooling families, any involved parent should find them informative.
So, in your quest for good reading material, I hope you'll find Homeschoolbuzz.com reviews useful. Have a title you don't see on our list? Simply send me an email, and I'll consider it for review. Be sure to visit often, as new reviews are added every week, and are also featured in our homeschoolbuzz.com weekly newsletter. As always, we appreciate your visits to our website, and welcome your feedback and comments. Happy reading.
