All About Homophones

Homophones are words that sound alike but are spelled differently such as knight/night, bee/be, and their/there. The folks at All About Spelling have but together this book totally devoted to exploring homophones – it will help you teach homophones and reading to your one to eighth grade students. Why teach homophones? They are actually fun words to play with. Who would benefit from this book? Anyone needing to brush up or accentuate reading and word differentiation skills. The book contains 101 worksheets, games and activities such as crosswords and card games, graphic organizers, and lots of fun things to do such as riddles and puns, and tongue twisters too.

Regarding the graphic organizer, the student will fill their personalized organizer in with the select homophone and either draw a picture or write a definition to help them remember the word's meaning. Six blank sheets are provided for copying, each has a slightly different flair to them. Worksheets each contain ten sentences with blanks. The student must decide which homophone to use to complete the sentence. Here's an example:

An octopus has (____) shiny legs, and the movie starts at (____) o-clock sharp, and she (____) fifty hotdogs to win the contest. Obviously your choices are the number eight or the word ate. The worksheets are separated by grades, and you are encouraged to mix them up, so if your second grader is ready for the fourth grade words go for it! Some of the tricky homophones like their/there, and to/too/two are listed under 3rd grade level.

At the bottom of the worksheets (101 total) are fun riddles or tongue twisters or fascinating facts. All about Homophones is a great way to keep learning new words fresh and fun, and your student will come away with a good handle on these unique words. My son enjoyed doing them and was impressed with his own skill at how many of the homophones he recognized. It really gave him a boost in confidence!

Currently this book is available in either electronic or printed format. Be sure to check out their free online homophone machine.
