Marie Curie: Giants of Science #4

This biography shows a fascinating peek into the life of the unstoppable, charismatic Madame Curie. Known for her impacting contributions to science, and for being the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, her life is one to explore. It is no surprise she became a groundbreaker in science as she had an insatiable appetite for knowledge. The author explores her thirst, and shows us a truly remarkable woman. You may remember my review of the first "Giants of Science" starring Leonardo da Vinci. I felt Ms. Krull revealed too much of Leo's personal life. This book was much different, it reads fast, and just enough was offered to keep the reader's curiosity wanting more. Here is a passage where the author shows Madame Curie's distaste of her eventual worldwide fame:

Fame was a jolt. Marie was pursued by an early form of paparazzi eager for any details of her personal life, trying to judge if she was "properly" feminine. Some reporters managed to get into the Curie's house while Marie was out. She would pick up a paper and read descriptions of Irene, of their black and white cat Didi, reports of things her daughter talked about. "We must be interested in things, not in persons," she lectured a nosy reporter. It got to the point that when people approached her, she sometimes denied being Marie Curie: "You must be mistaken," she'd say with dignity, then vanish.

Readers will also be surprised to hear Madame Curie slept with a vial of radium next to her bedside, as she was enamored by the pretty glow it gave off. Enough of me telling you little tidbits, just know this is an interesting bio, and whether it be this book or through internet research, Marie Curie is one life that should not be overlooked, especially by girls interested in science.

The other books in this series include:

Isaac Newton, and Sigmund Freud
