Write Shop Story Builders

When approaching creative writing with your students, I bet you've heard on more than one occasion "I don't know what to write about." Even if you give your child a topic he may stare at his notebook as blank as the page, not inspired with any answers to the who what why or where. The write shop has got you covered! Through the use of their 'card' decks, your child will be provided the basic essentials of a story: plot, characters, character traits, and setting. Then hopefully with that support your child will take off and come up with a fantastic story. I had the chance to review two of their story builder e-books World of Sports and World of Animals. In both of these story builders you are provided with two decks (black and colored print) as well as blank cards for coming up with your own ideas. It is suggested that you either print up the card categories on different colored paper, like character cards would be blue paper, and setting cards could be green, or print them out in the colored print. Students can then randomly or methodically choose cards to base their story on. To keep the mood fun (writing should never be a chore), they offer ideas for games such as poetry fun, round robin where students add to each other's stories. Here's an example of some of the story cards from World of Sports:

Characters: acrobat, archer, bicyclist, basketball player, diver.

Character traits: aggressive, anxious, unprepared, and spirited.

Setting: airplane, amusement park, hospital, kayak.

Plot: enters a race, suffers an injury, wins a medal, must do the right thing.

As you can see, I already have a good start to at story:

The aggressive diver on an airplane suffers an injury. Or, the anxious acrobat at the amusement park wins a medal. Now just add a sprinkling of details and you've got a fun creative writing exercise. We did a "5" minute story where we took our elements and wrote a story as quick as we could. By the end of the time limit we were thrilled with the results and couldn’t wait to finish them. It's a really entertaining way to obliterate writers block. From World of Animals some of the stories we composed were: a dainty cat in a cage can turn into a human, a bold bat becomes a stuffed toy at an amusement park, and a confident boa constrictor lives in a barn and can turn rocks into gold. Yes these are outrageous story pieces, but oh what a good time we had! The whole family got into this and we all thought it was brilliant to do as a group – we love hearing each other's hilarious stories. Perhaps your current writing program has gone stale. Why not mix it up with some story builders from The Write Shop. Whatever you do choose to use for writing, my advice is to instill a love for writing in your kids. Don't yell, or force, rather gently encourage and supply them with the tools they need to write, and if it can be fun that's a big plus.

Both the World of Sports and World of Animals Story Builders (e-books) are sold on the Writeshop website for $7.95 each.
